Usability/Interface for Contacts
May 22, 2007, 04:46:55 pm
I would like to request a user interface/usability change for viewing contacts.  Currently, to see a list of ALL of the contacts I must do a search and select all.  I would like to see some sort of contacts button or link that immediately allows me to interact with contacts.  I've been deploying CiviCRM across an organization and the users seem to be confused at first as to where the contacts are located.  It just isn't intuitive in it's current form.  What do other people think about this or other usability concerns?

Thanks,

Here's the snippet of the link you can use to view all contacts:

q=civicrm/contact/search/basic&reset=1&force=1

e.g:

http://demo.civicrm.org/drupal/civicrm/contact/search?reset=1&force=1

You can embed this link in places that suit you the most including any civicrm blocks by overriding the block template. Yes this does not answer your question, but gives u a decent solution for the short term :)

This link is good, as you said, for the immediate term.  I think I am imagining something a little more user friendly and interactive perhaps like the Gmail (Google's Web E-mail) interface.  The two applications actually have a few things in common (and would be good to see on a CiviCrm contacts page).

1. Tag or Group contacts that have been selected via a checkbox/select all action

2. View Snipped or important information about all contacts at once (without having to scroll down past the search grid)

3. Click to view more in-depth information

4. Next and Previous within search results once clicked on a contact (I think this feature has already been requested, but I'll request it again)

5. Quick view (link/navigation) for all in certain tags and groups

Gmail doesn't have this but you could imagine this:

6. Export contacts that have been selected via a checkbox/select all action

A lot on this list CiviCRM does, but it's not always intuitive and integrated all in one place.  Is this the right place for this type of discussion?

Thanks,

Keith:

yes, this is the right place to have such a discussion. Thanx for the suggestions and various ideas. As an open source project, contributions are also very welcome. Would be great for you to take the next steps and do the foll:

1. Create one or more mockup of your ideas so that people can comments and give feedback

2. Implement the above mockup :). We'd be happy to support and help you make progress with this

While GMail is definitely a great application, the implementation is not trivial :) So any and all help would be great and much appreciated
