Upgrade to 4.2.8 - Mailout Issues with HTML Linking
March 04, 2013, 06:40:36 pm
Hello,

I've recently upgraded to CiviCRM 4.2.8 on Wordpress and I've been getting a strange occurrence where my mail outs are containing strange links that are 404 pages.

I've tried performing 'test' and 'live' mail out, but the links within the HTML of the original email get modified to set to website/extern/url.php?u=813&qid=19369

Thanks,
Michael

Hey there,

Not sure how much you know about how CiviMail does tracking but those links aren't as strange as you might think.  All links in CiviMails are passed through a url on your website so that CiviCRM can count the number of times people click on the links.

The civicrm.org links are constructed like this, for example: http://civicrm.org/sites/civicrm.org/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=614&qid=20540

It looks like something has broken during the upgrade which makes those links not work.  Probably to do with how the initial bit constructed.

Do you have links from before the upgrade that you can compare to, to see what is different?

Not sure if this will require you to clear cache, change some settings locally etc. or if it is bug in 4.2.8 that will need fixing.  Are you able to explore that a bit more yourself? In any case, if you want to get a mail out quick and don't mind not having tracking, as a work around, you can uncheck the box that says 'track clicks' (or similar) when you are sending out your mail.

I would also suggest that you delete all template cache files.

( EDIT: I would also suggest that I read others' posts better before I post. Michael already wrote what I said. You see--he knows what he's doing. :) )
