Contact References

Since events only allow you one location, I'm working to find a way to be able to add recommended hotels to an event without having to input them every time. Right now I am inputting them as an Organization (probably going to create a new "Hotel" contact type). Then I have added a profile to the event that uses a Contact Reference so that I can get to that hotel that we've already created. But all that does is give me the name.

How do you go about seeing more details? And how can you pull those details into a View? I can't find anything that allows me to access those fields (basically contact information and a few custom fields about rates and such).

I haven't been able to find a lot on Contact References, so I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong or what.

You can use the API to get more details.

In what view? In a View of Contacts, you can should be able to display whatever fields you want. If the display type is Fields.

If you are thinking about a View Block that runs off a Contextual Filter based on the Event that would then show relevant Hotels etc, then I would be interested in hearing how you get on. But as you say, have no idea how Contact Reference can be used to then pull in associated data for that Contact

You might be able to use the View Block to just list the Hotels, and then have a link off them to another View that would show more info

It's a view that lists the training's details at the top; the host's name, location, and contact information in the middle; and the recommended hotels for that training with their details. I can't have it go off elsewhere, as it has to match what they have on their current site. I'm trying to come up with a way to store everything in CiviCRM instead of them having to create a Drupal node and a CiviCRM event. Right now they spend about double the time to create a training because all the host info and hotel info are in Drupal and the registration system is in CiviCRM.

When I create the view, I can add the name of the hotel, but I can't find anything in the list of fields that is the details for that hotel.

I think you would have to use the API in a customized View template to get those details.

Thanks. I wish there were a way inside CiviCRM to add something like that (recommended hotels). I have the feeling that it's something a lot of organizations could use since typically if you're having a big event you want to list the details about the hotels. Most are probably just manually entering it into the body of the event, but it would be nice to have them stored as a location or whatever and be able to reuse them.

would be great and super helpful if you can "corral that lot of organizations" who can use the feature into either contributing code and/or sponsoring the feature

Unfortuntely someone needs to either contribute or sponsor for wishes to come true :)

It's just one organization that I'm working with personally, and I'm coming onto this project after almost two years of messes created by others. So the project is hugely over budget and they wouldn't have any extra funds for something like that.

It's just that I know a lot of organizations do the same thing (recommended hotels) and for them that kind of thing missing would be a show stopper from them using CiviCRM. Or if they are using it, they're just listing the info in the details and having to input it every single time.

Seems to me you could mark your hotels with a tag like Chicago, New York or Detroit. Then you can have a View of Contacts filtered on that tag and then you can show just those hotels and also the details.

Then you can make a block for each city and then add that block to each event page.

Hmmm, I'll try that! I would be so happy if in version 2 of this site if I can get rid of this mess of Drupal nodes and references and have it all in CiviCRM.
