Set threshold for putting bounced email "on hold"
March 19, 2008, 04:08:03 am
Currently an member goes "On Hold" as soon as it bounces. Is there a way to set a threshold so that after it is reached, the mail goes on hold? Many times bounces are temporary and the problem may clear up without any intervention.

Note: After a few days, I have observed many people have viewed this post but no responses yet. Have I made it clear enough? Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

I've asked out CiviMail lead folks to review and respond - so should be some thoughts back at you soon.

Hm, that’s strange. Our approach is that we evaluate the ‘seriousness’ of the bounces and mark the address ‘on hold’ only after a certain number of a given bounce type happens (see the contents of the civicrm_mailing_bounce_pattern and civicrm_mailing_bounce_type tables).

Do let us know if your CiviMail install doesn’t act in accordance with these tables.

We see a weird issue where Hotmail sends back a 'mailbox unknown' or mailbox unavailable even though we can send email to the user using a standard email client. I'm guessing it is a Hotmail spam prevention mech. however this disables a users account straight away.

To combat this, you can track down the relevant rule in the mentioned tables and remove it (or, better yet, create a custom one for such Hotmail messages and make it a soft bounce).

If you end up with such a rule, we’d be more than happy to include it in CiviCRM 2.1 for the benefit of all our users…

I wasn't aware of the use of these tables because I did not install the system. I'll try to find the relevant documentation and see if I can tweak them in some way.

That was easy enough after I looked at the table and its description. Now all we have to do is test it.
