I did a fresh instal of drupal 7.21 from cpanel, in folder root/example ...works fine

under configuration>file system set the temporary directory tried both "temp" and "/temp" also

downloaded latest civicrm 4.2.8 on my desktop civicrm-4.2.8-drupal.tar.gz
I go to modules>install new modules>Upload a module or theme archive to install find civicrm-4.2.8-drupal.tar.gz click install..the hourglass just turns for 20 sec or so and I don't get a progress bar nothing happens

I then try to install from URL>://sourceforge.net/projects/civicrm/files/civicrm-stable/4.2.8/civicrm-4.2.8-drupal.tar.gz/download

get an error Cannot extract temporary://update-cache-e0e93dfe/download, not a valid archive.

Also tried with 4.2.7 and 4.2.6 they don't install either

I installed a drupal template and another extension with install new module and they both worked without any problems

Thank you Hershel for your quick reply. It worked just ftp'd and unzipped to sites/all/modules
