Drupal AND Wordpress?
March 14, 2013, 11:31:07 am
Ok, somebody's head is probably going to explode, but I'm going to ask anyways.

It seems like everyone is asking about Drupal OR Wordpress.  Can you do Drupal AND Wordpress?  This assumes that I follow commonly accepted good practice and keep the three databases separate.  This looks even more doable with 4.3 because of the Accounts module. I understand that you are supporting/developing for two separate systems and could be willing to bear that pain. I've also seen where Lobo says that CiviCRM should be CiviCRM regardless of the CMS, but we're not there yet.

Thanks

since this is software, the answer for question like: "Can you do this ...." is mostly yes, given enough time and resources :)

However, unless you do have some PHP skills and are willing to invest a fair bit of time in the below, i'd recommend against it. Few things that come to mind about being problematic with the below include:

1. The civicrm_uf_match table which matches uf records to user records in the CMS will need to be fixed

2. The settings issue where the path is different for WP and Drupal (not just the hostname). This is potentially fixable by overriding the settings via a hook / civicrm.settings.php

3. And all the things that i dont remember right now :)

Fair 'nuff!  That's what I was expecting, but I was holding out hope that Drupal/Joomla/WP would allow it to be more platform independent.  (Long live the Java mantra!)  You've just done such a great job of making Civi look like Civi no matter the platform that I had to ask.  The debate of choosing a roadway seems to be major for more than just me.

You don't have to make a decision right now. While trying to "share" the same CiviCRM database across two platforms is a recipe for headaches, you can switch between one and the other if necessary, on a one-time basis.

What I mean is that if you start now with WordPress and then decide in a month that it's not working out, you can switch your site to Drupal and not lose your CiviCRM data.
