Save as...
March 14, 2013, 01:05:03 pm
I wish CiviCRM offered a "Save as..." option on pages that had a "Save" button.  Most other software commonly provides "Save as..."  Such an option allows a user to make a copy of their work.  For example with MS Word, I can modify an existing document to create a new document.

The only similar solution in CiviCRM is to create a template.  However CiviCRM will not allow me to use an existing object, such as a past Event, as the basis for creating a new template.  I have the same problem with many other entities in CiviCRM.

Thanks for your consideration.

many of the objects in CiviCRM have a "copy" functionality that makes a copy of the current object. A few examples include: profiles, events, contribution pages

Good, now I see how to copy an event.  I had been looking for this before, but was not able to find it.

Unfortunately, "Copy" appears only on the "Manage Events" page, and it is hidden under "more."  The copy option does not appear on the actual event page.  It does not seem to allow me to copy an event as a new event template.

I still cannot figure out how to copy an event template, custom data set, or custom field.

Custom field sets take a lot of time to create, but I can't seem to start with a copy of an existing set.

I suggest making the copy option more visable and universal.

Thanks.

Frank

Please consider contributing the code to perform a copy of custom field / group. I suspect quite a few other folks will also find it useful

If you have any specific suggestions on how to improve the UI with limited screen space that would be great. Some mockups / links to other sites doing similar things would help
