I am testing out a rolling membership renewal on my website and found that my test contact had an expired membership and it does not appear that Civi attempted to authorize a paypment to renew the membership.

I am attaching an image showing the contribution page and the membership page today. You can see that the membership is expired and that renewal was selected, however the renewal did not process. I am not sure if this is a bug or mis-admin.

I would test this on the sandbox site, however I do not think the payment processor on the sandbox is setup correctly.

We're experiencing the exact same issue on a 4.2.6 site at the moment. It seems the commonality is the expired membership.
From my understanding, instead of creating a new membership CiviCRM will try to renew the expired membership. But as the new contribution is a recurring one it fails to find a membership with the recurring record set and hence everything stops at that point leaving the contribution in a pending state.

Have you had any luck with a fix?
