I'm SO confused
March 20, 2013, 07:49:25 am
Good Morning!

I was thinking of installing CiviCRM.  But I run on Windows 7.  Could someone please help me? I'm totally confused right now.

That does not matter? CiviCRM is a web-based application. It runs as a Wordpress plugin, a Joomla extension or a Drupal module. CiviCRM will in most cases run on a webserver. If you want CiviCRM to run on your local computer, you have to install a webserver on your local computer. This can be done by using XAMPP for example (http://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/). And XAMPP can run on a Windows 7 machine.

You then install the CMS you want to use, so either Drupal, Joomla or Wordpress. And you then install CiviCRM as part of the CMS. Does this make a little more sense?

OK, that makes a bit more sense.  Which extension/plug in would you recommend?

That would probably depend on what CMS software you're using, whether it be Drupal, Wordpress, or Joomla, or if you will be hosting it on a desktop using XAMPP.

Okay.

CiviCRM is a module that plugs in to Wordpress, Drupal, or Joomla.  You need one of those to use the software.

Maybe if you share some of your plans - and needs for CiviCRM - others can offer suggestions as well.

Using XAMPP, you could set up a vanilla install of Drupal on your machine and then install CiviCRM on that.

Do you plan on having users interact with your CiviCRM instance through the internet (event signups and donations and such)? If so, you will need a web server with a CMS software.
