Can Civi accomodate a fully external transaction environment (cart as a service)

Can Civi accomodate a fully external transaction environment (cart as a service) such as those options offered by Authorize.net in which the entire transaction including payment collection is performed outside of the Civi installation in question?

This is of course a question designed to determine if there is  tractable way out of pci compliance hell.

Thank you Michael, for your kind and competent reply.

Perhaps sadly:

The New Zealand payment processor is not an option, as we wouldn't do this kind of business w/a gateway outside the U.S.

The items listed as “no code . . “ and similar – nothing really there.

Google Checkout is out of the question:
o   It has been cited by none other than eBay as being untrustworthy (2006), and has countless complaints from smaller entities.
o   Google has proven to be unapproachable either for support or to lodge complaints/concerns.
o   PayPal Standard is inappropriate and inadequate in our setting.

The Authorize.net support from Civi’s perspective does not include offsite processing, as stated on the site.  We would have to go to another processor, which represents a bit of tail wagging the dog for us.  We could build our own, which would largely defeat the purpose for us.
