Why might a Smart Group not be updating itself
March 21, 2008, 09:28:26 pm
Hi - i have a Smart Group based on "Household Member of" = % which seems to pick up everybody who is Member of  Household.

But I just realised my Smart Group still has people who no longer have any Relationships to Households. IE if I repeat the search and Update Smart Group it drops them out.

I thought Smart Groups were doing this anyway. Something I am missing?

Peter - I have no idea why this would happen as we do not cache Smart Group members. Can you recreate on the demo by creating this smart group and then deleting one of the "found" Household Member relationships? If so, definitely post details to an issue for 2.1.

As a side note, the Relationship search (in advanced search) does not "respect" the Disabled property of Relationships (yet - this is scheduled for fix in 2.1). Is it possible that the relationships still showing up in the smart group have been disabled?

Hi Dave - my quick test on Demo didn't replicate, but my sense was it wasn't a case of all instances. WIll have a play on our site some more and see what I can break.

Okay - just updating - the Smart Group that was built with all contacts who have a 'household member of' relationship is clearly not functioning as a Smart Group - so I am going to delete and reconstruct and see if it becomes stable.

So no proof yet but Chris had been manipulating 'household member of' via a script and wonder if that was not being picked up by the Smart Group. Deleting and re-establishing a Household member of has caused them to leave and then rejoin the Smart Group.

But .... if a person has 'use household address' ticked - and then has relationship = 'household member of' deleted, what is the expected outcome?

I find that it leaves the 'use household address' ticked, even though it does not show the name of the household, but does still show the address of the household in the summary. And if I just reselect the 'existing household' by typing in some letters to find it, and hit save it does NOT reestablish the 'relationship'.

Seems I have to untick 'use household address' then Save, then Edit and reset it. (I know this isn't normal activity - but what do you think should happen if we either delete the relationship or untick 'use household address'?)

Which raised this example

Two people live together - create Household. Set both to 'use household address'. Person A moves, so we untick 'use household address' and put in new address.

Then as Household is no longer functional (for our purposes) we delete Household. This leaves person B with 'use household address' ticked and showing the old Household address. Is this okay?

Or do we need to go in and unselect 'use household address' being mindful to record the details before we untick it so we don't lose the address details?

Maybe if we unselect 'use household address to individual Any chance it could ' the default would be to populate the Primary Location address with the address that was the Household Address, so there is no risk of losing that data?

Peter - I think we can and should handle these changes in "Use Household Address" status a bit better / more seamlessly. I've updated an existing 2.1 issue to include rules for how I think this should work. Please review and update with your comments if you think some cases are still not handled:
