Change of Namibian currency symbol from $ to N$
April 05, 2013, 04:40:22 am
I am currently testing CiviCRM as an extension to our EduNet Namibia website in order to allow contributions also from local individuals and companies. In Namibia we usually do *not* use the standard "$" sign only, but instead precede currency values with "N$" in order to distinguish the value from other currencies (most importantly: the US Dollar).

By default, CiviCRM has "$" set - where do I change that to "N$"?

And as a side note: how can I get that change propagated to the CiviCRM plugin distributions beyond the one for WordPress, which I am using - since this is actually a little "bug", even if the Wikipedia article on the Namibian Dolla may suggest that "$" is used: we simply don't. Since the N$ is linked 1:1 to the South African Rand, we would rather use "R" as an alternative instead.

Regards

Gerard

1. You can fix it locally in your site directly in the DB in the civicrm_currency table

2. In general we try to follow wikipedia / iso-3360 conventions. So would be good to find references to where R or N$ is used. Please file an issue on our issue tracker and we'll fix it for new installs

Unfortunately external links are not allowed in your forum, so please find attached the "Proclamation by the President of the Repubic of Namibia", where under 19 (b)(i) you will find the official symbol for the monetary unit of a Namibian Dollar: N$.

This proclamation is in force since 15.09.1993, and as such it is binding for Namibian companies as well as organisations to use this monetary unit symbol - or alternatively the ISO 4217 currency code NAD.

I have now created issue CRM-12290 for this.
