Did civi create a folder in outlook called civimail?
April 08, 2013, 12:27:04 pm
Strangest situation I've come across yet:

I had about 350 emails in my outlook 2010 inbox yesterday. This morning I had 50. After digging around trying to find the missing 300 emails, I found a folder called "CiviMail" with two subfolders: "ignored" and "processed." It had the missing 300 emails in it.

Doe anyone have ANY idea how this happened?

My email address is currently setup as the default one for Civi, but I don't ever remember setting up CiviSync or anything else like that.

Thank you!!!

It sounds like by setting that up you caused the Bounce emails to go to your account - where the civi cron will then run a script to try and update the CiviMail report with the outcomes.
Probably worth rereading the 'setting up civimail' in the Book - especially the bit on bounce handling.

Why, though, would it take existing emails in my inbox and move them to a different folder?

Also, I don't have a bounce account setup!

i didn't read slowly enough - no idea why 300 of 'your' emails would be moved - but if you don't know why the 'processed/ignored' folders exist i still recommend you read the documentation on civimail and bounces

where do bounce emails go then?

it sounds like you have configured your own mail account as the bounced mail account (you must have a dedicated one for the bounces).

Pete suggestion is a wise one: read the chapter in the book about setting up civimail, should clarify what's the right way to setting it up

I had no bounce set up because I've been testing and debugging some other issues. Removed everything and forgot to add it back.

The moving the emails is the most concerning issue here for me. I trust you on the bouncing issue (and will read the documentation). I'm pretty sure nothing in the documentation says it's normal for emails in your inbox to move to a different folder.

pretty sure the documentation does not recommend using your personal inbox for bounce processing either :)

haha - fair enough. It was the only email that I knew 100% was working as I was testing out the supposed verp issue :)

Open to other ideas though on the moving email issue!

the email processing scripts creates folders etc as documented. It moves the mail into sub-folder when it processes or ignores them

got it. I think this makes sense. I have a lot of reading to do.
