Primary location type vs primary checkbox
April 11, 2013, 06:21:59 am
You can set the location type of an address to "Primary" (instead of work, home...).
But you can also mark any address as "primary location" using the checkbox.

What are the functional differences?
Do you use the address type or the checkbox within your CiviCRM installation, and why?

Thank you.

I don't think the location type of 'Primary' is defined 'out of the box' (see screenshot from current Edit Contact > Address form). The 'Primary' location type available when creating profile fields is a 'pseudo' location type which results in assigning the configured default location type to that element and marking it as Primary (checkbox).

The address, email, phone instances which are marked primary (checkbox) are the ones that will show up in the default search results.

Of course location type options can be modified, so someone might have added that to the list of location types (civicrm/admin/locationType?reset=1&action=browse).

Confusion may have arisen because you can select a Primary address in a few places like when creating a Profile (see attached screenshot)

I found the cause of the confusion: the out of the box location type 'Main', is translated to 'Primair' in the Dutch version of Civi. That's why I saw a 'primary' location type and a 'primary' checkbox.
Thank you Dave and Michael for your help.

OK - do you think there might be a better translation for this, to avoid the confusion? If so, might be worth talking to the dutch community about updating the dutch translation
