Cannot get custom field to show in online registration form

I have created a custom field that I would like to include in a registration form for an event. In the past I have done this and the custom field appears in the drop down menu of the 'include profile' when configuring the online registration. Now the custom field does not appear in the list... Any reasons why this could be?

You probably need to explain more about the type of field - is it used for Contacts, Participants, Events, Jellyfish?
