Reporting Duplicates from Overlapping Groups
April 15, 2013, 12:37:49 pm
I'm trying to run a report for contact info for our staff. I'm filtering it through group membership. The problem is that we have multiple organizations in our office with some staff people working for more than one organization. This means they're in multiple groups. So when I run the report, Civi isn't checking for duplicates and I get multiple contacts for the same person. Any quick fixes?

Not sure you have spelled out how you are doing this.
Are you doing it from Adv Search by selecting the multiple groups and looking through the resulting list of names - I would not expect to see a person listed twice via this approach.
If you can confirm that is happening, can you replicate on Demo

Hi pete, thanks for the reply.

I know what you're talking about, and you're correct. That doesn't return duplicates for me. What I'm referring to and was not very clear about was going to Reports > Reports Listing and creating a report called CMM Staff Directory. Under Report Criteria > Set Filters in the Group pane, I select "Is one of" and then select all of the staff groups. That is the only filter that is set for that report. When I run it, I get multiples of certain contacts. I've checked all the staff groups and found this: the number of times a contact appears in the report is directly related to the number of staff groups they are in.

Does that clarify a little bit?

what report template are you using? if it was a membership or relationship report, for example, i wouldn't be suprised if it showed more that one contact since the contact might have more than one membership or relationship.  But if this is based on a contact report, then that does sound like a bug.

in any case, trying to replicate on the demo server is useful because then

* we can work out if it is specific to your installation
* other people can see more clearly the issue you are having

It was based off of the contact report. I created a report on the demo server called Contact Info Test Report. I created a user, Roy Mercer, and added him to multiple groups. I included all of those groups in the report. You can see how I did that in the criteria. I didn't have the duplication issue on the demo, so I'm guessing this has to do with the version of Civi that I'm using?

Thanks

upgrading to 4.2.9 may fix the issue.  or it may be to do with some other aspect of how you have things configued / other differences between your site and the demo site.
