How to cancel a recurring membership?

A client using v3.4.8 (and part way through upgrade to 4.x) is having issues flagging people as no longer auto-renewing. If a membership is flagged as recurring and not cancelled, the Membership screen shows "Membership renews automatically" and is checked, readonly.

This is done via JS and the UI was improved in CRM-10084, but I'm guessing there was a way to cancel a recurring membership before 4.2, and I just can't work out how to do it via the UI.

Does anyone remember finding a workaround to cancel recurring memberships, which this site could use until they get to 4.x?
