Best implementation environment for small charity
April 17, 2013, 03:42:35 pm
hi

I will be implementing civi for a small charity within the next few months, and we are trying to decide what the most appropriate ISP & service offering would be.

Seen the advice to go for VPS to allow control over software versions and guarantee system resources - but my concern is that most of the VPS offerings only include hardware, network and virtualisation layer support (or you can pay for a high spec managed service at significant cost).  While the basic service would be OK in terms of me getting it running,  I'm concerned about issues arising after I am not available to help with support...?  The client has basic IT skills only in-house.

There seems to be a few providers offering an alternative hosting service based on a VPS but where OS, PHP, MySQL is controlled by the ISP.  Maybe this would be better for my client despite the downside of losing control over software versions?

Grateful for all advice!

Andy

some folks who are part of the community and help a fair bit:

Canada: Koumbit
US: CiviHosting.com
UK / Europe: CiviSites / Circle Interactive

all of them are great community members and we need to ensure the community supports and uses them!

p.s> and just to make it super clear, i have no interest in any of them. heard good things, but not evaluated them personally. Like the people involved in all of them :)

Hi Andy

Unlike Lobo, I do have an interest to declare here: I'm from Circle Interactive. We offer managed hosting where we maintain the application as well as the rest of the stack, so the client can focus on using the software and not worry about upgrades, security etc. We have a range of options from fully managed, cpanel or on your own VM. We also provide commercial support for CiviCRM, though we only guarantee to reply during UK office hours. Not sure what time zone you're in, but we manage to support folk from US West Coast to India.

Find us on http://www.circle-interactive.co.uk/ for more details and get in touch if that sounds interesting.
Regards

Hi, www.vidahost.com are very CiviCRM friendly & do a 3 years for 2 deal, and give charities a 50% discount.  My experience of them has been excellent.  I take it you're in the UK?
