Internal Server Error/Civi stops working when doing mailing labels

We're having a peculiar issue with a Civi install and I'm hoping someone may be able to point us in the right direction to fix the problem.

The setup: Yesterday, we were creating mailing labels through Civi. We were doing searches for specific groups/types and then creating mailing labels from the results.

The issue: The first three processed just fine. The searches took an expected amount of time, and the labels came out perfect. But, suddenly, when searching for the fourth group, Civi would hang for a long period of time and then return with this page:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

All Groups were created from the same .csv database. After this error happened, we could no longer access Civi at all, and access to the site itself (or the WP admin page) was sporadic at best. Whenever we tried (even after restarting the browser), it would hang for a long time and then come back with the same Internal Server Error page. When we moved to a different computer in the office, we were able to access the site and WP admin right away, but it would hang when trying to access CiviCRM (not just the Search function of Civi, but ANY part of it).

I have no idea what time it was when the first error happened, but this is the cpanel error log from the earliest entry through when I left work:

Right now it looks like you have 842801 connections to your MySQL databases and this is causing MySQL to shutdown. Too many connections are being opened but not closed. This is all being used by the indyones_civicrm database. You will likely need to contact the developers of Civi to see why this is not closing the database connections.

Still unsure as to what caused the initial error, but a restart of the database by the hosting company took care of the Internal Server Error access issue. Just fyi.
