Having a Description field for Profiles
April 25, 2013, 05:50:11 pm
I expect this has come up before but searching for 'profile+description' didn't make anything leap out.

is there a technical issue or user objection to the idea of having a Description field to go with Profiles.

Seems the naming of profiles is problematic since the name appears publically - but we often want to distinguish between a

Contact Info

profile, for example, that collects just Name and Email, v one that collects Address and lots of other bits.

A description field, such as we use for Groups, would be most helpful.

Is this a major task and hence costly?

Not a major task, actually fairly easy :)

want to file an issue and we'll take care of it for 4.4

something that we should do for profiles / custom fields / groups is to allow the user to choose a name. Right now the system creates a unique name which is good (for most cases) but not great if you want to do things programmatically. would be good to allow the admin to create the name manually and then use that if no conflict.

When you work on it, might be useful as well to display the creator of the profile (there is already a created_id column).

Got a few times profiles that were wrongly deleted or stayed unused forever because no one knew where they came from and if they were used.

Great to hear it will be trivial - thanks lobo - maybe the created_id field should be exposed on Groups too? Save me telling everyone to 'add your initials to the description!)
