Bounces not going to bounce address, but instead to sender address
April 25, 2013, 10:43:38 pm
I'm having trouble getting the bounce processing set up. I can send mail fine; I'm using Google Apps for Nonprofits.

Here's my problem: I want mail to have info AT macphailsa.org as the return address, but I want bounced mail to go to return+etc. AT macphailsa.org. I thought that this was possible. And when I look at my bounced mail, it seems to include both types of addresses. But nothing is going to the return+etc. address; instead, the bounce is just coming back to the info address (which is the account I'm using for sending).

I attach a text file with a copy of a bounced email that didn't bounce where I wanted it to. I couldn't get the forum software to let me post it here; it kept complaining that I was posting an external link, even though I wasn't trying to.

Hi,

beware that the smtp server for google apps is not made for mass mailing. Not sure what is the limit these days (2k per day?) but if you plan to use intensively civimail, you will hit their limit.

Lobo: I'm using WordPress, not Drupal. Is there an analogous location in WordPress? Note that if you look at the bounced email, there is a return path with the "return+etc" address; but there's also a return path with the "info" address. Clearly the first return path is being ignored. I'm just unclear about how to get the "return+etc." address to be the return path used.

Xavier: My organization is tiny, and we will not come close to the Google mailing limits.

Thanks to you both for your comments. I am thinking that I'm probably missing something obvious, but I just haven't been able to figure out what.'

Any more thoughts?

Looking at your header file, it seems that google mail is adding an extra

Return-Path: <info@macphailsa.org>

Therefore overriding the one civi put (and that looks good)
Return-Path: return+b.3.2.0f135d82087242b1@macphailsa.org

Instead of using the info account for the smtp sending, try using the return one, see if it helps.

You don't have another smtp server you could use for testing and be sure it's the google that is to blame?
