Duplicate Contact Rules

Does CiviCRM compare the first name and Nick Name fields at all when it checks for duplicates?  Or is there a way to set it up to do that?  There are clear duplicate issues like a Michael (First Name) and Mike (Nick Name).  I know e-mail comparison's should help offset that, but it would be useful to know if the Nick Name and First Name of two separate contacts are the same just as if they were both first names.

By default, CiviCRM uses the First Name, Last name and email address for duplicate matching. You can change the default by going to Administer CiviCRM and editing the "Contact Matching" and/or the "Duplicate Contact" rules. The Contact Matching rule is used when creating new contacts, when importing and when using profiles. The Duplicate Contact Rules is used when you click on "Find Duplicate Contacts" in the "Manage" section of Administer CiviCRM. "Nick Name" is available in the drop-down list for both rules.

Hope this helps,
Cynthia
