CiviCon Ecosystem Tune-up: Regular community calls/hangouts
April 30, 2013, 10:08:42 am
I was in Kasia's group during the CiviCon ecosystem tune-up session. We talked about how to have more community interaction through regular conference calls or Google hangouts or something like that.

I sometimes take part in regular Twitter chats with an informal group of nonprofit community organizers (#commbuild). (I don't think tweet chats are the way to go for the Civi community.) The chats have a few core organizers who make sure that someone from the community signs up to facilitate the chat each week and helps suggest topics, etc. Each time the chat has a different facilitator and a different community-driven topic. The chats are typically Q&A but have also worked well as lightning talks or expert interviews.

There are also monthly Drupal for nonprofits/social change calls which do something similar but I think the same two people facilitate and organize them each month.

Thoughts? Could something like this be sustainable in the Civi community through monthly meetings via phone or video? Or is something like this already going on?

The community of CiviCRM using Community Media organizations have regular calls, meetup, and camps.  Developers/service providers are intentionally excluded from those calls so that the CiviCRM users can "ask dumb questions" and help each other.  The result is often one of them volunteer to post an issue several of them had but thought it was just something they were doing wrong or didn't understand.  I participate in calls and/or Google Hangouts for a number of technologies, but they are all developer centric and are much smaller projects than CiviCRM.  I think it would be challenging to get enough interest in general calls/hangouts, but classes between users who already have a common use case is possible and effective.
