Multiple memberships for same organization
April 30, 2013, 05:30:36 pm
I can't find it now, but I was looking around the forums and/or JIRA and something clicked with a previous issue I had with membership reminders.

The post I can't find talked about problems when renewing a membership when there were multiple memberships for the same organization held by the same contact. I think this is causing problems on at least one instance of CiviCRM I'm using, plus a site I've got set up for demos.

On the production site, I'm getting multiple membership reminders. I've been using CiviMember to track a small group's officers: President, Treasurer, and Membership Coordinator. Under this scenario, it's possible that one contact could have several memberships associated with it:

There are two levels of memberships: Regular and Associate. A Regular member can pay additional dues and also hold an Associate membership (for a different professional category) at the same time.

Since I'm tracking officer positions with CiviMember also, a regular member could be President for one six-month term, and Treasurer for another. Over the course of several terms, the contact might have his "Regular" membership, plus other memberships for terms he's served as an officer.

The idea was to be able to look back at the membership history and see who's served as an officer for a particular time period.

It seems as though this use case is not supported or handled well by CiviCRM, although I recall reading that there was a suggestion to fix this. Does anyone have a suggestion for how to handle this?

Also, is it possible this is causing problems with reminders being sent out multiple times, too?
