Fiscal Year Expansion Anyone?
March 26, 2008, 09:30:34 am
I am interested in seeing expansion of the fiscal year option that comes with CiviCRM 2.0 (you can set your fiscal year in Administer CiviCRM > Global Settings > Date Settings). If you set this, then it will be reflection in contribution dashboard and the contact contribution tab. However, it seems like this should also be reflective in the membership dashboard so you can see membership year-to-date in a way the mirrors your fiscal year (if my fiscal year starts October 1, then I might want to see my memberships reflected in the same fashion).

Of course, maybe others don't want this. So I thought it might be good in the settings to have four options with the fiscal year setting:
Reflect in contribution dashboard
Reflect in membership dashboard
Reflect in events dashboard
Reflect everywhere (not sure if this makes sense, but I figure more and more features will be added -- like CiviGrant, etc. So it would probably be good to flag them all).

What do people think of this? Would you benefit from expansion of the fiscal year settings?

Is your membership term rolling or fixed periods? If fixed, CiviMember should be able to give you year-to-date info pretty easily. If rolling, I can see the benefit of cross-matching the member/contribute records. In general, it's difficult to cross-match a membership and its corresponding contribution, but that's something on the roadmap for future versions. If all your memberships are handled online (no memberships received and processed offline by check) than that connection between the membership and contribution does exist, though it's not exposed through the interface -- you would need to query the tables outside of Civi.

As of 2.0, if you elect to "Record Payment" when adding or renewing a membership record "offline" - we do create the civicrm_membership_payment record (same as we do for online signups and renewals).
