Smart groups that are public should display on civicrm/mailing/subscribe
May 07, 2013, 06:09:52 pm
Hey guys,

I have a smart group that is public but it does not display on civicrm/mailing/subscribe

It does display if i specifically feed the mailing list id: http://civicrm.org/civicrm/mailing/subscribe?gid=120

But not if I don't: http://civicrm.org/civicrm/mailing/subscribe

Anyone object if I remove the is saved search criteria on lines 104 and 105 of CRM_Mailing_Form_Subscribe?

What's the use case of letting people join a smart group, that is presumably done so you are automatically part of it if you have the right profile?

I have experienced endless problems with manually added contacts to a smart group, where users get confused about who is in and why (especially true when you mix with group hierarchy).

on civicrm.org, we send out a monthy newsletter to our newsletter group.

this is a smart group which is composed of
1) people that have attended an event
2) people that have completed one of our many sign up forms
we also want people to be able to subscribe to the newsletter

we could create another static group and add that to our smart group, but that seems like an extra and unecesary layer IMO.

the solution if you don't want your smart group to be manually overridden is to not make it public.

i think doing this makes things a bit/lot more complex. Sometimes keeping things simple and allowing more advanced usage via additional steps is not a bad tradeff (IMO)
