Activities timeline - how to add completed activities to default timeline view

A customer has queried why when opening a case via "manage cases" their timeline appears without completed cases showing?  If you then click on the date column completed activities appear.  Does anybody know how to show all activities, completed or uncompleted in date order by default?

do you mean completed activities?

maybe a couple of annotated screenshots might help?  when i tried to replicate what you are describing by opening a case from the case dashboard on demo i did see completed and scheduled activities (see screenshot)
