CiviContribute displays error message but donation goes through

I'm getting a few emails from folks saying they got double charged because they got one of those "did not go through, please wait 12 seconds" messages when in fact the donation did go through. I've been combing the wiki and other settings within Civi to try and hunt down what's going on to no avail.

Note: using Civi 3.4.7 and D6 (don't ask, we're getting ready to try and upgrade)

Any tips for a newb?

There's really no point trying to debug this for such an outdated version of Civi. Since this hasn't come up on the forums recently I'd guess that it's been solved in a more recent version.
Post back if it's still a problem after the upgrade.
PS I have the latest 4.3 running fine under D6, and it was originally a 3.3 site. Upgrade went fine :)

Coleman,

Have you done any Wordpress conversions? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the process if you have. We're about to do such a conversion (well a total rebuild actually) and I'm in need of some testimonials before we pull the trigger. Can I PM you about it?

I did, but no love. Without some testimonials it's a little hard to make convincing arguments to the higher ups. I think someone should try and find these stories and consolidate them. They're great selling tools.

keep looking and posting. Do  a few google searches perioidically. we do know a few folks have done the transition
