Mass Mails and Google Apps
May 15, 2013, 02:07:31 am
Hi there,

I'm working with a client who would like to send mass mailings (press releases, mass mailings etc) via CiviCRM. They are looking to send up to 5,000 emails at a time. At the moment they use Google Apps for their day-to-day email use, but they also use Mailchimp for mass mailing. In order to send mass mailing of this magnitude from CiviCRM it looks like they need to either set up a separate SMTP server (like CiviSMTP) or scrap Google Apps and use the host's native mailing system... is this correct or have I misunderstood something?

What do you mean by "scrap Google Apps"?  We use our host's native mailing system for Civimail (bulk email) and we use Google Apps for day to day email (individuals' email).  You can use both.

Hi Algozier,

I mean it is not possible to route bulk mail via Google Apps. If I want to send bulk mail one option is to stop using Google Apps as it cannot handle/is not intended for bulk mail, and use my server's SMTP settings instead. It's only really a problem when attempting to send bulk mail.

Lobo, has there been any advance in using Amazon SES SMTP for mass emails ?

but there have been a few forum posts in the recent past, which indicates that a few folks are probably using it

I think this is the main limitation - I believe there have been bad experiences in the past with Google Apps, but not sure if the issues of reliability are still valid.  See:http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=166852

I'm using Amazon SES for our implementations of CiviCRM. Works fine, and we have limits of 100,000 e-mails per day and 28/second.

Required a little bit of custom coding to get replies to be forwarded to the sender though, as SES didn't like the format.
