Renew Multiple Memberships in Single Credit Card Transaction
May 16, 2013, 02:18:25 am
Our ORG has a National and Local Chapter, each with a separate membership. When a member renews via a contribution page they can renew more than one membership at once - this is great. However, many members call or fax in payment via credit card. I don't see in the back-end how an admin user can "renew" both memberships in a single credit card transaction.

Am I just missing something very obvious? It is possible, as I am new to Civi.

Thanks,

Tyler

I'm thinking you've set up a Membership Price Set in order to allow members to signup for both National and Local chapters via online contribution page (self-service). You can choose that same price set from the back-end when you click 'Submit Credit Card Membership' button from Membership tab - this will allow you to select both memberships and submit the transaction.

Dave,

Thanks for the reply. If I want to create a NEW membership I can use the Price Set (which is very handy) but if I try to RENEW an existing membership via the renewal link in the "More" menu in the backend (see screen shot), this allows the backend user to ONLY renew that single membership. I cannot seem to find the steps or process for RENEWING multiple memberships with a single credit card transaction.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

In the above post screenshot you will deduce that I used the SUBMIT CREDIT CARD MEMBERSHIP button at the top of the screen, used the Price Set, submitted the payment BUT this recorded NEW memberships rather than renewing the current memberships.

Ideally the backend would allow a user to tick a "renewal" box so the admin user could renew all the memberships with a single transaction.

This seems like a helpful feature to add at some point. Would be good to think a bit about the UI flow since currently the backoffice "renew" links are at the individual membership level.

Agreed. A simpler solution would be to add a check to see if constituent/contact record has more than one membership then offer an option for the back office user to renew which memberships with check boxes of all memberships that could be renewed. Since this functionality is already in place for front end self-renewal members, then I would think that it might be fairly straight forward to have this on the back end too. This scenario comes into play when a member phones in and wants to renew the chapter and national memberships with credit card over the phone.

Presently the back office staff must enter either 2 different credit card transactions or process the card via some other mechanism (outside of Civi) then manually renew each membership without a transaction recorded in Civi. At least that is their current work flow so as to not enter the credit card info twice and to not charge the contact's credit card twice.

Eileen McNaughton at Fuzion is currently working on a solution which would allow your staff to use the front-end form to renew for a given member (for the upcoming 4.4. release). This probably is a decent solution for you so you may want to 'watch' that issue and potentially help test it once it's available in an alpha or beta release of 4.4:

I would be glad to test and I will watch for this. Thank you.
