Settings - Outbound Mail SMTP gmail
May 23, 2013, 03:05:48 pm
I am running CiviCRM 4.0.8 on Joomla 2.5. I have just upgraded my site from Joomla 1.5 and CiviCRM 3.x. I was able to move everything over successfully and CiviCRM seems to be running fine. However....

My outbound mail settings seem to be broken. I use Google Apps for Education and have always had CiviCRM send via SMTP authentication to my email address. Now, when I try to run a test email I receive the following errors:

Oops. Your SMTP settings are incorrect. No test mail has been sent.
An error occurred when CiviCRM attempted to send an email (via SMTP). If you received this error after submitting on online contribution or event registration - the transaction was completed, but we were unable to send the email receipt.

The mail library returned the following error message:
authentication failure [SMTP: SMTP server does not support authentication (code: 250, response: mx.google.com at your service, [205.134.255.107] SIZE 35882577 8BITMIME STARTTLS ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES)]

This is probably related to a problem in your Outbound Email Settings (Administer CiviCRM » Global Settings » Outbound Email), OR the FROM email address specifically configured for your contribution page or event. Possible causes are:

Your SMTP Username or Password are incorrect.
Your SMTP Server (machine) name is incorrect.
You need to use a Port other than the default port 25 in your environment.
Your SMTP server is just not responding right now (it is down for some reason).
The FROM Email Address configured for this feature may not be a valid sender based on your email service provider rules.

I have searched this forum and the Internet for this error. I can't find any answers. I have made sure that my site key in civicrm.settings.php matches on both the backend and frontend. My best guess is that there is a problem with SSL, but that is just a guess. Can anyone help me?

4.0 is very old, unsupported, and has security issues. Can you upgrade to 4.3?

Double check your settings, particularly SMTP Server:

ssl://smtp.gmail.com

Yes, include the ssl:// part

SMTP port should be 465 and your username should be the full email address being used.

We also use Google Apps for education.  I use the 'mail()' setting for outbound mail for our production server.  However, on my test server I use 'SMTP' and a Google Apps email account.

I believe the Google account you use has to be the same as the default CiviCRM 'From Email Address'.  I think this is because CiviCRM sends the test email from this account.  The test email failed when I used a different account recently.

I've also used the SMTP server of my local ISP for the test server.

Why do you want to use Google Apps for outbound email instead of using mail() on your server?
