email PDF receipts breaks event registration

After upgrading to 4.3.3 from 4.1, PDF receipts no longer work. Under Settings - Undelete, Logging and ReCAPTCHA, if "Attach PDF copy to receipts" is enabled, the registration returns a blank page and no confirmation email is sent even though the user is registered for the event. It worked ok in 4.1.  I do not have "Path to wkhtmltopdf executable" set.

Wondering if any one has seen this and knows how to resolve... thanks.

you need to either install and use wkhtmltopdf or disable the pdf generation

that error is caused by dompdf running out of memory / execution time
