Best practice for phone number formatting?
June 06, 2013, 11:01:48 am
How should we format our phone numbers for import so as not to conflict with future CiviCRM auto-formatting of phone numbers? (described here: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-11292)

That is, are we "safer" just importing our phone numbers as 1234567890 or would it be okay to import as 123-456-7890?

i think either format should work. I suspect, we'll need to make things configurable and user-controlled before making any significant changes to the underlying db and/or output

If you input with dashes, then you get to have it both ways. Civi will automatically strip them in the phone_numeric field, but keep them in the phone field.
Try asking your question on the new CiviCRM help site.
