Creating individual work address on import using related org data
June 10, 2013, 09:19:44 pm
hey guys, if an individual is related to a company on import, i.e. one that has been previously imported with all the (company's) work address info - how come that address won't then display as a work address for the individual? In other words, is the only way to do it to create separate work address columns, in addition to the individual's home address. Not a big deal, maybe, but seems like unnecessary extra work.

Seems like two earlier topics touch on this somewhat :

http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,24205.0.html

http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,28852.0.html

Also - anyway to choose which info to search on when doing advanced searches, meaning home or work?

Any help appreciated!

D'oh! Just stumbled on the work/home options in the advanced search which will allow to select which address to search on, obvious miss here. Still curious tho why if you import the org with correct "work address"  - and the individual is related to that org as employee on import - why it wouldn't just populate the individual's work fields. It looks like it needs the org address fields would need to be imported with that individual as well (?) unless I'm again missing something obvious...

Does make sense indeed. Would you be in a position to improve the import functionality with what you propose?

hi Erik, we'd love to try on next project. This one is nearing completion and on tight deadline so likely we'll have to manually cut and paste the company address columns next to the individual's name.

just checking - you are aware of the 'shared address' function - so the employee can be set to 'share address' of work - rather than copying pasting.

I'm probably missing it (nothing new there) but how exactly do we do this on import. I see how to do it manually within a record, but don't see the field/option available when we either go to import the company or the individual. We're doing about 30,000 some odd records, so can't do it manually. H

I tend to use my own migration scripts rather than the import function, so I do not know how the 'shared address' works in the import. The shared address functionality lets you share addresses between more contacts.

I don't think "shared address" on import is possible.  At least I cannot find it, which is a real bummer when importing 10,000 household members.  Can someone prove me wrong?  (Help!)
