We send a newsletter to our membership via email or postal mail. I have a mailing list on mailchimp that syncs to the group "newslettter_email". So, those who should receive the postal mail version are "all current members who are not in the group newsletter_email". Is there a way to set up a smart group to manage this?

Here's my solution:

1) create a smart group for all_members, includes everyone who is a member.
2) used the custom "include/exclude" search to include all_members and exclude newsletter_mail and include tags "newsletter_postal_always" and "advertiser"
3) save the result as a new smart group "postal_newsletters".

A long, strange trip.

Search builder lets you combine AND, OR and NOT operators, and might could give you the desired result.
