PDF letter generation times out / Batch ?

Dear all!

We have a selection of < 100 contacts of members to which we would iike to send a PDF letter.

The problem we're facing is that PDF letter generation just times out. If we reduce the number of contacts significantly (i.e. choose 5 instead of 100) it runs like a charm.

Q: Can it be that I can only generate PDF letters interactively? Of course we could upgrade our infrastructure, but it still looks like a catch game if we want to generate 1000 or 10000 letters.

Is there really no batch available for that?

Don't others run into that problem?

P.S.: This is CiviCRM 4.3.3 on Drupal 7.2.2 on Ubuntu 12.04.

More PHP memory helps, but also installing wkhtmltopdf appears to fix the problem.
