Opt-out is working but contact still appears to be in group

My understanding, based on an old post of Lobo's on here is that when a contact uses the Opt-out link in a mailing, it updates their privacy settings to 'NO BULK EMAILS'. It should also show the contact as a member of the relevant group but with the status of 'Removed'.

On a Civi 4.2.8, I am testing this and I'm seeing the status unchanged on the contact record - still as 'Added (by Admin)', and if I go to the group itself, I see the person in the list of contacts. The functionality is working i.e. if I then send another mailing to that group, the contact is not receiving it, but it's slightly confusing since there is no indication on the front-end.

Bug? Or am I missing something?
