CiviCRM 2 on Joomla 1.5, Whats the problem?
March 30, 2008, 10:13:13 pm
So I just did a clean install of Joomla 1.5.2, enabled legacy support then installed CiviCRM 2.0.1 on my Dreamhost account.  Far as I could tell every thing seems to work fine.  I imported some test data just fine, edited records ok, heck even CiviMail worked perfect as far as I could tell and I didn't even have to configure it.  Is there something that I'm missing?

I'm not sure your question. Is something not working?

If you're referring to previous posts/docs saying that 2.0 doesn't support J1.5 -- that's basically the core team's way of saying that they've not gone through the Q&T process with 1.5 and so they won't officially state that it's supported. 1.5 was not yet released as stable when CiviCRM 2.0 went beta, so they couldn't ensure it would be compatible.

But I've got 2.0 running on 1.5 and it's working fine as well.

Me too. I wasn't aware of 1.5.2 though.

Ok that explains it then because after I did the install everything was working fine even though the documentation said it wasn't suppored so I just wanted to make sure.

You can even make it run non legacy with a few tweaks and that will improve performance.

I have not been able to install 2.0 civicrm on my 1.5.2 Joomla installation.  I have tried directly installing it using the installer. I have legacy mode enabled. After awhile the screen just goes back to the control panel screen. I have also tried changing the htmaccess.txt file by adding the parameters that have been suggested (size and time change) to the end of that file. The server's default is set up is 32 MB. But actually then my site doesn't even load.

I have also tried uploading the zipped file to the install directory, although I have no confidence that I'm putting it in the right place.  I have used /public_html/OGS/administrator/components/com_installer  But after that there is no folder available called "components" which is what I've seen is supposed to be the path.  If you next go to "view" then there is a "components" folder within that. I've tried uploading and extracting the file in the "com_installer" area and also in that "components" folder but in either case  when I install from directory, I'm told that the install package can't be found.

So what am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.

You can't install CiviCRM using the install from package option. There's just too many files -- Joomla can't handle it. You need to do the install from folder option.

Understand that all you're doing with that second Joomla installation option is removing the "unpacking" step from the equation. Rather than have the installer unpack AND install, you do the unpacking manually and then have the Joomla installer install it.

Where you put the unpacked CiviCRM files is really pretty irrelevant, so long as you can put the location in the installer field. For me personally, I usually create a subfolder off my root directory called "extensioninstall", and then upload the CiviCRM zip file there, and unpack it. The folder location in the install-from-directory needs to be the full path, so it's usually something like: /home/USER/public_html/extensioninstall/com_civicrm/

but the actual path is dependent on how your hosting package is setup.

Brian,

Thank you for your help.  The information about it not really mattering where I uploaded the files as long as I pointed the install directory to the right place was very helpful. I could focus on the important: the path. I thought I had tried adding the /home/user...before the public_html directory, but maybe I had something else wrong when I tried it that way.  I was successful.  Now I need to figure out how to use it.  I have a message saying that I should have innobase rather than myISam which is not enabled on the server. So I've emailed tech support to ask about it.

when I used the [full doc path plus unzip directory] to do an install-from-directory using the [1.5 without legacy] instructions, I got a white-screen something unexpected happened error.

When I checked my CGI logs to see what happened:

Code: [Select]
PHP Warning:  main(../includes/version.php) [<a href='function.main'>function.main</a>]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /hermes/bosweb/web277/b2773/ipw.[myusername]/public_html/avero/installation/index.php on line 22
PHP Fatal error:  main() [<a href='function.require'>function.require</a>]: Failed opening required '../includes/version.php' (include_path='.:/usr/local/lib/php-4.4.7/lib/php') in /hermes/bosweb/web277/b2773/ipw.[myusername]/public_html/avero/installation/index.php on line 22
Right off the bat, that 4.4.7 makes no sense to me, because my vDeck control panel claims I am running:

Platform Type
Debian
MySQL Version
5.0.45
Perl Version
5.8.8
PHP Version
5.2.2

CiviCRM doesn't show up anywhere on the uninstall pages, but when I tried to recreate the original install error -- it gave me an error message stating that the directory is already in use by another component.  So now I have an install directory that's dead and no idea what's wrong in the first place.
