Using Fill vs. Update
June 28, 2013, 11:18:19 am
hi, another totally basic question : using fill vs. update if we have a set of custom data fields, and we are importing and only want to add additional data, i.e. retain the data that exists in fields for those records that we have previously imported, we would select fill, right? Update presumably overwrites it. Using civi 4.0 , the fill feature appears to be updating. Any thoughts on this appreciated. H

to clarify, the help box says "Fill: Fills in additional contact data only. Database fields which currently have values are left as-is. " - this doesn't appear to be happening, it's not leaving it "as is."

I second the problem ... we find that "Fill" and "Update" work properly on the core fields (name, address, email, etc) but custom fields are over-written when using the "Fill" option.

A clarifying question - when you say "Fill" doesn't work properly on custom fields, are you referring to custom fields that have multiple values (like checkbox and multi-select fields)?  Or is it not working with "normal" text entry custom fields?  If the latter, does the problem exist on the demo site?  If so, we can file a bug report on this.
