WordPress SEO Plugin Upgrade Breaks CiviCRM
June 30, 2013, 03:32:43 am
I upgraded the Yoast WordPress SEO plugin from version 1.4.7 to 1.4.12 and it broke CiviCRM.  It causes the content of CiviCRM generated web pages to be displayed at the top of the page above the normal web page heading.  Specifically the "crm-container" division is the first line in the web page's body.

Information about the plug-in is here: http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-seo/ and http://yoast.com/wordpress/seo/.

Sounds like there may be a problem with that plugin, not with CiviCRM.

Do you contact the author of that plugin?

I haven't had time yet.  I first have ti determine which version first broke by installing versions 1.4.8 and up.  Then I have to try the developers version to see if it is broken there.  After that I'll report it.  I'm OK using the old version for now.  But eventually I'll have to upgrade or change to a new SEO plugin.

I had the same issue. Disabling the "social" meta data options in Yoast SEO fixed the problem.

Something with Yoast's implementation of those options (which were introduced around 1.4.8, I believe) conflicts with the CiviCRM generated web pages.

Thanks for the fix.  I disabled the "Add Open Graph meta data" option under the Social Media FaceBook tab.  That did the trick.  When I get time I'll figure out the exact version that broke this and report it to Yoast.

The latest Yoast Plugin appears to have fixed the problem with the "Add Open Graph meta data" option.  It not longer breaks our online donation page when it is enabled.

I just setup our 2014 fundraising event and noticed that when I load the URL for the event information page http://phoenixacademyomaha.org/CRM?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/event/info&reset=1&id=3 the event information is blank.  When I use the shortcode [civicrm component="event" id="3" action="info" mode="live"] in a webpage it works correctly and the event information is displayed.  I determined that the WordPress SEO Plugin is the cause (again >:().

I last tested this event functionality late last year.  There has been numerous SEO plugin updates since then.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Given the problem with this plugin, I considering switching to the All in One SEO Pack.  Does anyone have experience with this?  Is it CiviCRM compatible?

How did you determine it was Yoast's SEO plugin.  I have had good luck (kncoks wood) with it lately.  I have not tested All in One SEO with CiviCRM, but it is a very good SEO plugin.

I disabled the plugin and the event page worked.  I have since determined that unchecking both the Facebook "Add Open Graph meta data" and the Twitter "Add Twitter card meta data" option will also solve the problem.  I had previously tried unchecking only one at a time.

On a test site, I installed "All in One SEO Pack" and enabled the "Open Graph meta data" and the "Twitter card meta data" with it.  The event page works fine.  I even found a plugin (SEO data transporter) that will transfer the SEO page title and descriptions from "WordPress SEO" to "All in One SEO Pack".

We can live without the Facebook and Twitter metadata.  Also I also read that "WordPress SEO" is the better plugin.  So I sticking with it for now.

"WordPress SEO" used to break our donation page with the metadata turned on.  I discovered it quit doing that back in March and thought the problem was fixed.  I now know it was only partially fixed.
