pdf memory limitations? printing 2000 pages

I know there have been problems with both of the pdf libraries included in CiviCRM when trying to print large number of pages. If PHP memory is not a limitation, can these libraries handle a large number of pages? What is the longest report people have managed to produce from CiviCRM? Lobo somewhere in the forums about a year ago mentioned included https://code.google.com/p/wkhtmltopdf/ in 4.2 but I don't see it in packages. Were there problems with library not fulfilling its promise of better memory management and scalability? Or just lack of resources to make the replacement?

FWIW, We're trying to help a client who has sponsored a lot of development for accounting integration and enhancement of grants print 2000 cheques.

Great! We'll install and test it out. I found the package name in the wiki led to instructions for where to conveniently specify where it is installed.

Thanks!
