Order of name parts on mailing labels
July 19, 2013, 06:59:54 pm
Our database is a mix of Western and Vietnamese names. When we create mailings, it would be nice to have the names appear in the local custom. For example, my name is

Dennis Marshall Gray

Gray is my family name, of course.

With a Vietnamese name like Nguyen Ai Quoc, Nguyen is the family name and appears first.

Is there any way to conditionally print the names in the correct order?

Currently no, but this and localized address formatting (i.e. on  a per country basis) has come up recently. Would be good for someone to tackle this project

I did this kind of thing in Zim many years ago. I just ticked a box that showed how to order the name.

Great, might want to spec it out in more detail and then get someone to implement the spec. I suspect some folks doing multilingual stuff would be very interested in it.

I'm thinking that this could be done with a template override for the mailing labels - though admittedly I haven't looked at how mailing labels are generated.  Specify a custom field for name order, then use Smarty conditionals to determine name order.
