I want to expose an auto-complete contact field to Anonymous users. Is this possible, and if so, can you please provide guidance on configuring this functionality?

For example, an anonymous student completes a webform-driven online petition which has an Organization (School) auto-complete field for the student to establish their relationship to one of the known schools.

You can disable "check permissions" for that organization field. Just be sure you have set filters so that no contacts show up in that list that shouldn't be exposed to the general public.
