I am new to CiviCRM and am looking for a way to implement a single transaction for a visitor to both join as a member and register for a conference...  it is being used with WordPress.  Here's a description of the process I'm hoping to implement:
SCENARIO: There are two membership levels: paid & free.  Visitor must be a member (of either level) in order to register for a conference.  Paid members get a discount on conference fee.  So, when a visitor selects "register" for the conference, they will be asked to sign in (if not already signed in).  If they are not yet a member, they will be asked to "join."  Finally, when they complete their conference registration, they will be sent to PayPal to complete the payment.  GOAL:  To combine the membership & conference payments in a single PayPal transaction, so visitors will not have to do this separately if they are not already members, or if they are free members and wish to upgrade to paid membership for the conference discount.
