Unable to send test email using SMTP
July 22, 2013, 01:45:59 pm
I am unable to get SMTP to work with CiviCRM 4.x

I am able to use SMTP in Drupal 7.22 and I am using the same settings in the CiviCRM SMTP settings. I get different errors depending upon which port I am using. I use fastmail.fm and they require port 465. If I use that port it either times out or has a Fatal Error where MySQL "goes away".

Is there some other setting I need to use?

Which port do you use for Drupal where it works?

I use port 587 in Drupal but if I use 587 in CiviCRM I get the following message:

authentication failure [SMTP: SMTP server does not support authentication (code: 250, response: mail.messagingengine.com PIPELINING SIZE 71000000 ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES 8BITMIME STARTTLS)]
(This message is generated from the CiviCRM 4.2 site.)

Hmm. Can you uncheck the authentication checkbox on the CiviCRM mail settings page?

I had done that before and got the following error:

Failed to set sender: xxxxxx [SMTP: Invalid response code received from SMTP server while sending email. This is often caused by a misconfiguration in Outbound Email settings. Please verify the settings at Administer CiviCRM >> Global Settings >> Outbound Email (SMTP). (code: 530, response: 5.7.1 Authentication required)]

Hmm, seems like a contradiction. Authentication is required yet not supported. :)

I do not know what the problem is. I would suggest you ask our SMTP provider if they can help.
