Can too many customizations on a new contact import cause an upload of 500 individuals too constantly time out? Any ways around that?

Have you tried a smaller upload set? Say, 100 individuals?

Another idea would be to increase your ram and timeout seconds. (I'm not sure what that entails, but those two factors seem to be mentioned in this "Using Import" subforum.)

superhua's suggestions are what I would recommend. The other way is via the API but for 500 records, that may be overkill.

The API doesn't feel like overkill if you're already familiar with the command line though - in that case, using the import.php file (in civicrm/bin/csv) might be a good choice.
