Advantages to upgrading 3.4.5 to 4.3.5?
July 24, 2013, 11:24:10 am
I've recently taken over fairly large CiviCRM implementation.  The current install is 3.4.5, running on Drupal 6.  I'd like to make the case to my web department and management that Civi should be upgraded to 4.3.5, and Drupal to 7.  After looking around, though, the only major advantage to the upgrade is security. I'm still new with Civi, and since this would be a very large undertaking for my organization, I'm trying to justify it as well as I can.  Is there a list of features/ differences between Civi versions that anyone can recommend?

Thank you!

There have been 3 major releases since then:

http://civicrm.org/blogs/dave-greenberg/announcing-civicrm-42-and-new-extensions-directory
http://civicrm.org/blogs/colemanw/civicrm-430-released-hundreds-improvements

Also, upgrading Drupal and CiviCRM at once is biting off a lot. I recommend starting with CiviCRM (since it runs fine under D6). Assuming that upgrade goes smoothly, it won't take you more than an hour or two to get it done. Then you can think about tackling D7.
Try asking your question on the new CiviCRM help site.

Ok, thanks for the information.  That sounds less painful than I'd thought.

A CiviCRM upgrade, if it goes smoothly, is under an hour. If something goes wrong, then it's between 2 to 20 hours. :(

But most upgrades are smooth. If anything goes wrong, post back here. Definitely try the upgrade on a dev copy of the site first.
