Worskhop deposits

Our creative writing workshops for youth are going to be free, but we're going to require a $25 deposit to hold their place until the end of the workshop. If the participant is a no-show (one-day workshop) or stops coming (multi-week workshop), we're going to cash the check. If the participant attends the workshop, they will get the check back. In CiviEvent, after the person signs up for the workshop, how will that appear on the back end? If the participant is a no-show and we end up cashing the check, will I be able to go back and show that? And if we DON'T cash the check, will we just show that workshop as paid?
Sincerely,

You could make a custom field for "deposit check received" and also for "deposit check returned to participant" to track those things.

Then for a no-show, yes, you can record a payment.

I don't see any reason to record payments for other people who didn't actually pay. :)
