Membership page not tied to contribution
July 26, 2013, 09:11:51 pm
We are fiscally sponsored through an organization who's payment processor is not an extension of CiviCRM. But we would like to offer a membership for participants who donate a certain amount. Once they sign up for membership, that info will be in CiviMember. How can I reconcile the member info with the contribution information that's coming from a different source? If I import it, will it automatically sync?

Are you going to import the members payments?  If so, in 'Import Contributions' you would link the payments to contacts (either via External ID or other criteria), and use a 'financial type' (aka contribution type) of 'Member Dues'.  That should do it.

Thanks Andy. Yes, I plan to import member payments. So, it's possible to create just a Membership page where people log in and it's not tied to a contribution, right? For instance, once they donate through the other payment processor they can then sign up for a membership. Does that make sense?

Also, does the CiviMember feature generate member numbers? If not, do I have the ability to generate numbers? Thanks.

Hi, I would either try out the demo site (http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/) or install CiviCRM on a test basis.  That way you'd probably get a good appreciation of how it works, which should answer some of your questions.
Re.  the first question, I don't think that you can create a Membership page 'out of the box' but you could do it with a profile or using webform (neither is difficult).
Secondly each contact has a unique numeric id (called CiviCRM ID) - CiviMember doesn't create external numbers, so you'd use CiviCRM ID.
On another post elsewhere you wondered whether to go for a more simple system.... I don't think that Civi is that complicated frankly.  I guess it can be, but of the box is pretty straightforward.
