Grant Type
July 29, 2013, 02:58:42 am
we are running a charitable organization,  we recently installed our civicrm, it is very much helpful for our trust. we use civigrant module for one of our project "sponsor a child" through which we distribute grants for School Fee, Exam fee, Bus Fee etc., apart from this we distribute Educational Aid(Notebook, Pen, Chart paper, A4 Sheet etc..,_ )which we should record in each and every contacts. we like to record those items  as a quantity not in money value. Please help me how i can do this..

thanking you

some options:
* create grant types for these non-monetary grants and create custom field(s) used for Grants to specify actual item(s).
OR
* record these as activities (create a non-monetary grant activity type w/ whatever custom fields you need)

Check out what civireports has out of the box, if you follow dave's second approach, you might have a report that is more what you'd need.

I don't know if you use civicampaign already, but would allow you to track as well the "engagement index" for each of these educational aids, that might be useful as well

Dave's approach is  the better one 99% of the time - but in certain limited cases I've also found it helpful to enable alternate currencies (such as the "XXX" currency) to track non-monetary "currency" (in our case, volunteer hours). It depends on your reporting needs.

@JonGold

We are drifting of topic a bit, but don't you have issue with reporting then, with civi happily adding 1 USD + 1 XXX = 2 USD (or whatever the default currency)

As an aside, I'd be curious to know what kind of work the volunteers were providing to be counted in XXX ;)
